Students regularly engage in collaborative learning, with the older students often mentoring the younger students. Even though we may not have had a choice in the textbook, the students will still be using it for explanations, exercises and homework. Gather a few children together and then sort the numerals by decades (ones, tens, twenties, thirties) before putting them in order. This is not to minimize the role of direct instruction, however.
