Customarily, dense matter material science is part into "hard" condensed matter science, which concentrates on quantum properties of matter, and "delicate" condensed matter science which examines those properties of matter for which quantum mechanics assumes no part. Teaching skills qualify educators for careers outside the classroom. The process by which a single unified electroweak force becomes two separate forces is electroweak symmetry breaking. Heuristically, the problem is that we can get spontaneous creation of tachyon-antitachyon pairs, then do a runaway reaction, making the vacuum unstable. There are weird particles, twisting waves and mind-boggling reactions. This particle decays into two photons, so, if you measure the enegies of the two photons and add them, this is the rest-mass energy (E=mc2) of the meson from which you can easily deduce the mass (m=E/c2). Solutions to the problems are given in Appendix F. A (relatively) near term goal is the completion of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2008 which will continue the search for the Higgs boson, supersymmetric particles, and other new physics.
